Booking your first Coachella should feel exciting. Instead, it usually feels like opening 47 browser tabs and still not knowing where to start. Tickets, camping, prohibited items, age limits, what to pack for a desert that hits the low 90s in the afternoon and drops to 55°F by midnight. It's a lot.

This guide cuts through all of that. We're covering the stuff that actually matters before you book anything: who can go, what the rules are, what to expect on the ground, and how to pack smart.

What You Need to Know Before You Go

Before anything else, get the basics locked in. The dates, entry rules, and eligibility requirements shape every other decision when planning a Coachella trip.

Coachella 2026 Dates, Venue, and Headliners

Coachella 2026 runs April 10 to 12 and April 17 to 19 at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California. The full address is 81-800 Avenue 51, Indio, CA 92201 if you're mapping out travel now.

The 2026 headliners are Sabrina Carpenter on Friday, Justin Bieber on Saturday, and Colombian reggaeton superstar Karol G on Sunday. Karol G makes history as the first Latina musician to headline the festival. The same lineup repeats across both weekends, so you're not missing anything by choosing one over the other.

Can Anyone Go to Coachella

Coachella is open to all ages. There's no minimum age requirement, and children five and under get free General Admission entry.

The one exception is onsite camping, which is limited to guests 18 and older. Younger attendees can camp if a parent or legal guardian is with them.

A few ground rules are worth knowing before you arrive: all transactions inside the festival are cashless, so plan to use a card or mobile payment for everything. The event also runs rain or shine, and the Colorado Desert weather can genuinely swing in both directions within the same day.

(Pro tip: if you can get there a day or two early, do it. Sorting out parking, shuttle logistics, and campsite setup before the crowds arrive makes the actual festival days so much calmer.)

Coachella Rules and What You Cannot Bring

The banned items list at Coachella is strict, and gate security enforces it without exceptions.

Bag size limit: 18"x13"x8.5". Anything larger doesn't get in, full stop. Beyond the bag rule, the following items are prohibited:

  • Aerosols of any kind
  • Cannabis or drug paraphernalia
  • Drones
  • Hammocks
  • Selfie sticks
  • Glass containers
  • Outside alcohol
  • Professional cameras with detachable lenses

Alcohol is available inside the festival, but only in designated bar areas away from the stages. Bringing your own from outside isn't allowed. Consumption outside the designated zones isn't permitted either, which surprises a lot of first-timers.

One more thing: do not tamper with or remove your festival wristband. It voids your access immediately and there's no workaround. Treat it like your passport for the weekend.

The official Coachella website publishes the full prohibited items list and updates it each year. Always check it before you pack.

What to Expect at Coachella 2026

Music is the main event, but Coachella also runs art installations, food vendors, and fairground rides across the grounds.

The festival runs eight stages covering genres from pop and hip-hop to electronic, rock, and everything in between. Beyond the headliners, the 2026 supporting lineup includes Addison Rae, PinkPantheress, Laufey, Nine Inch Nails, The Strokes, and Lykke Li, among more than 130 artists total.

Spread across the grounds, you'll also find large-scale art installations that people genuinely stop and spend time with. Art installations at Coachella are not background decoration. Previous years have seen pieces that drew as much attention as some of the mid-tier stage acts. The iconic Ferris wheel is worth riding too, but get in line before sunset. It fills up fast, and the view at golden hour over the Coachella Valley is the kind of thing you'll actually remember.

Food runs the full range, from quick bites to full meals, covering cuisines from Japanese to Italian to American comfort food. VIP ticket holders get access to additional dining options. Vegans and meat-eaters alike tend to find something that works. (Budget more than you think. Festival food prices are what they are.)

Planning Your Trip to Coachella

With the dates and lineup set, the next things to sort out are tickets, accommodation, and transport. The sooner you lock all three in, the fewer headaches you'll deal with as April gets closer.

Getting Your Ticket

2026 passes are currently sold out. Join the waitlist at coachella.com for the best chance at a spot if one opens up.

For future reference, here's how the pass types break down by weekend.

Pass Type

Weekend 1

Weekend 2

General Admission

$649

$549

GA + Shuttle

$779

$679

VIP

$1,299

$1,199

A payment plan is typically available with a deposit around $49 down and the remainder split into monthly payments. American Express cardholders get early access and occasionally discounted pricing, so it's worth knowing if you hold that card and plan to attend in a future year.

One important note: Coachella does not sell day tickets. Every pass covers the full three-day weekend.

Where to Stay

You have two main options: camp onsite or book a nearby hotel package. Here's how they compare at a glance.

Option

Starting Price

Best For

Car Camping

$420 + fees

First-timers who want the full Coachella experience

La Campana

~$2,600

Comfort-first campers who want real beds and climate control

Hotel Package

Varies

Those who prefer a proper shower and quieter nights

Car Camping gives you a 30x10 foot plot to set up around your vehicle. One thing to know: once you park, your car stays on the grounds until the festival ends. Coachella removed standard tent camping for 2026, so onsite camping requires a vehicle.

Hotel packages bundle festival passes with accommodations at nearby properties and are available through the Coachella website during ticket checkout. These work well if you'd rather have a real shower and a quiet place to sleep, but they add a commute to and from the festival each day. For most first-timers, camping is worth it. The proximity to everything makes the whole weekend easier.

Getting to the Festival

Three airports serve the area. Which one makes sense depends on where you're flying from and what you're willing to trade on price versus drive time.

Airport

Distance to Venue

Notes

Palm Springs International (PSP)

~35 minutes

Closest option, limited flight routes

Ontario International (ONT)

~1 hr 30 min

Often more affordable flights

Los Angeles International (LAX)

~2 hrs 30 min

Most routes, but traffic can push this significantly

Once you're in the area, Coachella's shuttle service covers more than 16 stops across the valley, including pickup and drop-off at several major nearby hotels. A shuttle pass gives you unlimited travel across the network for the weekend. If you're driving yourself, use the official festival map rather than GPS. Goldenvoice, the company behind Coachella, specifically advises against GPS navigation to the venue, and for good reason during peak arrival times.

The Empire Polo Club hosts Stagecoach the following weekend at the same grounds. If you're making a two-festival trip of it, Stagecoach outfit ideas sit on a very different end of the style spectrum from Coachella, so it's worth planning both looks before you pack.

Download the Coachella app before you go. It's the fastest way to get real-time updates, schedule changes, and any announcements during the event.

What to Pack for Coachella

The Colorado Desert in April is beautiful and genuinely harsh at the same time. Temperatures swing hard between afternoon and late night, and the dust is constant. Pack for both extremes and you'll be fine.

Daytime Essentials

The sun at Coachella is relentless. Pack these daytime essentials before anything else:

  • Sunscreen (bring more than you think, reapplication is non-negotiable)
  • Refillable water bottle
  • Sunglasses
  • Hat or neck gaiter for sun and dust
  • Portable fan
  • Battery pack and portable charger
  • Wipes and hand sanitizer
  • A compliant bag (check the size limit in the rules section above)

Evening Essentials

Once the sun drops, the temperature follows quickly. The difference between 4 PM and 10 PM at Coachella can be around 30 degrees.

  • Light jacket or hoodie
  • Leggings or sweatpants for campers
  • Wrist warmers
  • Lip balm with SPF (still useful after dark)
  • Small flashlight

Other Must-Haves

A few items on every festival packing checklist fall outside the day and night categories but carry real weight at Coachella specifically:

  • Earplugs (you'll thank yourself after three nights of loud sets)
  • Snacks or energy supplements (sugar drops happen, especially on day two)
  • Basic first aid items like band-aids and hydration packets
  • Shuttle pass if you're not camping onsite
  • A card or two as backup since everything inside is cashless

What to Wear at Coachella

Coachella is one of the few places where someone in a rhinestone bodysuit (a fitted one-piece covered in small crystals, for the uninitiated) and someone in a simple boho set (short for bohemian, meaning loose, flowy, earthy-toned pieces) are equally at home. For night sets specifically, both rhinestone and sequin pieces catch stage lighting well, though they feel and move differently once you're actually wearing them.

In practice, the desert conditions shape what people wear more than anything else. Breathable fabrics for the day, something you can layer for the evening, and shoes that handle uneven dusty ground for hours at a time.

For full outfit ideas across every Coachella style, our Coachella collection covers everything from simple festival-ready looks to full glam pieces built for the main stage crowd.

Coachella Guide FAQs

What time do Coachella gates open each day?

Gates open at 11 AM daily, with the first musical sets typically starting around noon. Headliners hit the main stage after 11 PM on Friday and Saturday, and after 10 PM on Sunday. Planning your arrival around gate opening rather than headliner time helps you beat the longest entry queues of the day.

Can you leave and re-enter Coachella during the festival?

Yes. GA wristbands allow re-entry throughout the day, so you can head back to your campsite or car for a break and return without issue. The wristband is scanned on the way in each time, which is why tampering with or removing it immediately voids your access.

Does Coachella 2026 have lockers?

Yes, and GA lockers are new for 2026. GA pass holders can rent a locker inside the venue near the main entrance, available across all three show days. A refundable $10 deposit is required. VIP lockers are located in the 12 Peaks area adjacent to the main stage. Both must be reserved in advance through AXS.

Is there phone signal at Coachella?

Signal gets unreliable in dense crowd areas, especially during headliner sets when tens of thousands of people are on the same network simultaneously. Download your set times from the Coachella app before you enter the grounds each day. Set a physical meeting point with your group at the start of each evening rather than relying on being able to reach each other by message.

You're More Ready Than You Think

Here's the honest summary: most first-time Coachella attendees overthink the logistics and underprepare for the weather. Get the basics right, join the waitlist if you haven't got tickets, and sort your camping or hotel early. The rest takes care of itself.

The festival does the heavy lifting once you're there. Your only job is to show up ready.
